PROJECT DATES

January 2017 – June 2018

PROJECT TEAM

Debra Bezzina
Project Senior Manager, Human Factors Group, U-M Transportation Research Institute

OBJECTIVES

  1. Expand the current deployment plans for Vehicle to Pedestrian (V2P).
  2. Compare effectiveness of DSRC-only based systems with those of hybrid systems (Wi-Fi and camera-based detection systems).

APPROACH

Four RSUs will be deployed at mid-block crossing along Plymouth Road. Three hundred (300) ASD-equipped vehicles will be deployed that accept the “Pedestrian” message. A warning will be given to the driver whenever a pedestrian depresses the crosswalk button or a pedestrian has been detected in the crosswalk.

OUTCOME

Assess the technical merits, effectiveness, and benefits of various systems that warn the driver about pedestrians in the crosswalk.
