U-M’s new Ford Motor Company Robotics Building includes research space for self-driving cars and so much more

Mcity has a tie to the new Ford Motor Company Robotics Building on the University of Michigan’s North Campus.

The Ford Robotics Building is located just a mile west of the Mcity Test Facility. Being in close proximity means U-M and Ford engineers can easily move from research labs in the Ford Robotics Building to Mcity’s real-world proving ground for connected and automated vehicles and technologies. In addition, the Ford Robotics Building has high-bay garage space for self-driving cars.

The Ford Robotics Building is a $75 million, four-story, 134,000-square-foot complex that is the new hub of the U-M Robotics Institute, and home to Ford’s first robotics and mobility research lab on a university campus, plus 100 Ford researchers and engineers.

The first three floors of the Ford Robotics Building hold custom U-M research labs for robots that fly, walk, roll, and augment the human body, plus classrooms, offices, and makerspaces. In a unique agreement, Ford occupies the fourth floor.

Ford has been a member of Mcity’s Leadership Circle of industry partners since 2015.
