Mcity in the News: IEEE Spectrum

In an article for IEEE Spectrum, Mcity Director Henry Liu speaks about the challenge of bringing automated vehicles to the same level of safety operation as humans. He explains that in order for AV’s to be on the same level, they will have to be able to handle rare occurrences on the road.

Since occurrences like a deer passing in front of a car or oil slick on the road don’t happen very often, it’s hard to program AV’s to know what to do in these types of situations.
